In our effort to understand resilience, we need to remember that people live in communities and neighborhoods that assist or hinder their ability to cope with traumas. As Saleebey (1996) writes in his discussion of the importance of healthy community life,
Membership [in a community] means that people need to be citizens—responsible and valued members in a viable group or community.
