In this chapter, we consider what is meant by counselling skills and by technique in counselling. In counselling and in counselling training there remains a tension between an emphasis on the attitudes and qualities of the counsellor and on the skills and techniques involved in the practice of counselling. To some extent, this tension is addressed in the following passage:

In our experience the counselor who tries to use a ‘method’ is doomed to be unsuccessful unless this method is genuinely in line with his own attitudes. On the other hand, the counselor whose attitudes are of the type which facilitate therapy may be only partially successful, because his attitudes are inadequately implemented by appropriate methods and techniques. (Rogers, 1951: 19–20)
