What is Assessment?

Assessment is a mental process whereby a situation is observed and interpreted in order to ascertain its quality. Headington (2011: 73) says, ‘Assessment is about measuring or judging, what someone knows, understands and can do’. An adult might observe a child to determine how far they were able to count. They might decide to help the child to count further by modelling the next few number names and encouraging the child to repeat them or to join in, either immediately or later.
