Professional development is crucial for organizational growth and school improvement. The professional growth of teachers and other staff is a key component of developing children's learning. Roland Barthes, a former US principal and well-known writer on school improvement, remarked: ‘Probably nothing within a school has more impact on students in terms of skills development, self-confidence, or classroom behaviour than the personal and professional development of their teachers’ (1990: 49).
