As I write this final chapter, it is autumn in Ontario. It is my favourite season. The trees are beautiful shades of red, yellow and orange, the days are warm and the evenings cool, the corn is fresh and sweet, and the tomatoes taste like tomatoes. Almost hourly Canada Geese fly over my house in their perfect ‘V’ formations as they head to a warmer climate. They have perfected leadership succession – whenever the leader of the ‘V’ gets tired, it falls back and another takes its place. This pattern continues as they make their way 1,500 miles to the southern USA.

If only human organisations could plan as efficiently and effectively. With the high leadership turnover in education described in the introduction, leadership succession ...
