Research on instructional leadership tells us what it looks like and the impact it has on student learning. But do these findings apply equally to primary and secondary schools? This chapter reviews the research and concludes that secondary principals’ instructional leadership is exercised more indirectly than that of their primary counterparts. In addition to direct work with classroom teachers it also involves overseeing the instructional leadership of middle leaders and organizing the school to support the work of improving teaching and learning.
