Young People and Housing

Young people and housing

The concept of housing is related to but at the same time different from the concept of home. Definitions of home evoke physical, social, cultural and psychological meanings – the expression ‘home is where the heart is’ illustrates some of this (Henderson et al., 2007: 124). A young person therefore can occupy a house, a flat or a friend's settee and not necessarily think of it as ‘home’. In contrast, housing can refer to the actual physical building for residency purposes of a young person or group of young people. Housing can also be conceptualised as a physical object affected by wider social structures and processes that in turn can profoundly influence young people and their lives.
