The form of settlement space known as ‘the city’ is about 10,000 years old. Classically it consisted of a central area with a relatively high population density surrounded by a supportive space of agricultural production. This bounded city form remained virtually unchanged until the period of capitalist industrialization during the 19th Century. At that time, the creation of two distinct classes, the workers and the capitalists, split the population with regard to wealth. Affluent families established homes away from the city in the hinterland, while retaining a place in town as well. Furthermore, when the forces of profit-making were extended to a capitalist market in real estate, speculators began immediately to stake out land outside the central city for sale.
