The homeless are those who cannot afford shelter by themselves. With no access to housing, they sleep outside or in public spaces such as streets, doorways, parks and subways. It is not uncommon to find the homeless sleeping in old automobiles, perhaps their only major possession left after losing a home (see entries on Housing; Real Estate for more explanation of housing markets).
Although there is generally a sharp distinction in regard to the availability and quality of housing among cities in the developed and developing countries, the problem of homelessness is a growing concern in advanced industrial societies.
