Sports and adventure tourism is defined as the active, passive or nostalgic engagement with sports and sports-related activities while travelling away from one's normal place of residence.
Sports and adventure tourism appear to be growing as more and more people recognise the health benefits of active holidays. Ritchie (2005) suggests that sport can contribute between 1 and 2 per cent of an industrialised country's GDP, and that 20 per cent of trips in countries such as Britain can be directly related to sports participation.
