Graham et al. (2000) differentiate between the terms ‘past’, ‘history’ and ‘heritage’. The past is concerned with all that has ever happened, whereas history is the attempts of present-day historians to explain selected aspects of the past. Essentially, heritage is the contemporary use of the past, including both its interpretation and representation.
