Every once in a while I read a returned survey questionnaire, examine self-report data or review notes I have transcribed from an interview and question whether or not the respondent has provided the ‘full truth’. The highly personal and oftentimes sensitive nature of our research questions can certainly encourage non-disclosure or even deception among participants. Wiggling our way into people's lives with requests that they speak, move or think along lines that we ask them to, can be rather disruptive and may alter the course of their everyday lives.
