A series of recent media reports, widely disseminated anecdotes and academic studies have pointed to the growing problem of child trafficking in global football (soccer) cultures. Stories about the illegal transfer of children (aged 8–16) from Africa and South America to Europe for the purposes of ‘talent development’ raise serious questions regarding international youth talent identification and youth academy systems in the sport. Knowing more about the ways in which children become illegally brokered across international boundaries might prove monumental in curbing the exploitation of vulnerable youth within the sport.
