When I discovered grounded theory as an undergraduate student, I thought it had to be the coolest academic idea on the planet. Today, I'm not so sure about the tenability of doing grounded theoretical work in active research, or its place in qualitative methodologies. Grounded theory is a term much bandied about in qualitative/interpretivist research circles, but probably one of the least understood. Common understandings and applications of the concept manifest like an end product of a ‘broken telephone’ game; where the originally communicated message is lost almost completely and replaced with an utterly garbled and nonsensical message. In what follows, we will briefly review the general principles underpinning grounded theory and discuss common applications of grounded theoretical methodology.
