Triple bottom line

Triple bottom line (TBL) refers to an accounting technique in which the health of a company is not judged solely by its financial record, or bottom line profit and loss, but also by how well it discharged its social and environmental responsibilities. It grew out of the drive for more corporate social responsibility and a belief that the behaviour of companies had to be interrogated in a way that went beyond the simple return on capital employed.

A number of accountancy firms now offer the service, which is supported by the major extractive industries such as Royal Dutch Shell.
