Quick Response Manufacturing

Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) is a basic extension of the concepts of Time-based Competition. Suri (1998) described QRM as a company-wide approach to reducing lead time. QRM is based on substituting cost-based management decisions with time-based management decisions. A particular point of managerial focus is to distinguish the contact time when a product is being worked on from elapsed time, and to recognise that elapsed time incurs non-value adding costs. Contrary to the common perception that faster ‘rush’ orders are more expensive, QRM recognises that a shortening of this lead time can actually lead to a decrease in production costs.
