Queues and Waiting Lines
Waiting lines, also called queues, are a universal issue in operations management as they can be observed both in manufacturing and service settings. It is useful to differentiate external waiting lines from internal waiting lines. An external waiting line builds up at the point of entry to an operations system. Once within a system, a product or customer will proceed through different processes or steps, and may on occasion have to wait before entering a workstation: this is an internal queue.
