Learning curves are a set of mathematical models that capture the time reduction incurred when completing a task repetitively and as a worker's experience increases.

Learning Specialised Work

In a 1987 landmark experiment, Roger Holtback, the president of Volvo Cars, manually assembled an entire car from scratch in a new factory in Sweden. It is reported that Holtback did manage to start the car and drive it off the factory floor, but that the car was not defect free! This experiment goes counter to the principle of a division of labour. In a modern automotive assembly factory, an assembly line worker would be assigned a single task, e.g. fitting brake drum assembly.
