There is a long history to the linkage between life events and poor health outcomes. As early as the seventeenth century Robert Burton described how melancholia was precipitated by environmental adversities, including interpersonal losses. Such observations began to be more systematically documented from the mid-twentieth century onwards. Specifically clusters of life events were noted to occur prior to the onset of physical and mental illness.
