The dictionary definition of assessment is ‘to evaluate or estimate’ (Oxford English Dictionary, 2009). Assessment has a range of functions, including motivating students, identifying strengths and weaknesses, monitoring progress, confirming the achievement of learning objectives, providing feedback, judging competence and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching (Allin and Turnock, 2007). The purpose of assessment can be formative or summative.
