Leaders have to be able to inspire and motivate others. They have to have a vision of where they're going that others can accept. This vision may extend well into the future, so individuals have to be convinced that their actions now will enable future generations to reap the benefit. For religious leaders, the vision may reach into the afterlife, and their followers are inspired by a description of heaven. Leaders in time of war have to inspire soldiers through patriotism, and make them believe that, if they die, it is in a good cause.
