You have almost certainly noticed that geography gets a bad press, especially when compared with history. Geographical programmes on television usually carry a travel, tourism or adventure label, Michael Palin's Himalaya and Sahara for example, whereas history programmes are advertised explicitly as ‘history’ or ‘archaeology’. The only time the word ‘geography’ seems to be mentioned is to preface questions in quiz programmes, such as Weakest Link. For instance: ‘… and in geography what is the most southwesterly county in England?’ This tendency reinforces the mistaken impression that geography is only about the location of places and names of capital cities, longest rivers and highest mountains.
