The focus of this chapter is poverty alleviation at the local level in developing countries, although often with relevance in some areas of developed countries, identifying programs and strategies that have been found to be relatively effective. However, it should be appreciated that policies and programs at the macro or national level designed to eradicate or reduce poverty will always have implications for what should, and perhaps can, occur at the local level.
