The sedentary lifestyle of many young children in the USA has contributed to a rise in children's health disparities. With significant increases in the prevalence of several childhood chronic conditions, pediatric health care providers and others are realizing that exposure to nature can have health benefits. Policymakers, and others, are turning to nature in their effort to develop sustainable methods of promoting healthy lifestyle changes. This chapter examines three promising approaches: the National Environmental Education's (NEE) Children and Nature Initiative, public park physical activity, and children's gardening. Exposure to natural environments and the promotion of outdoor activity in nature can have significant benefits for young children.
