In 1998, an Islamic primary school in Amsterdam was reported never to allow teachers to leave their pupils alone in the classroom. Children were not allowed to wear short sleeves or trousers, nor tight clothing. Officially, corporal punishment was banned, but what about ‘having to stand for an hour in a corner on one leg’, a teacher wondered.
