In the first part of this book the focus was on the individual in an organizational setting. In Chapter 4, ‘Groups’, we moved up one system level to consider the problems and the solutions found for them faced by individuals working together in groups. Individuals learn about themselves and how to get along with other individuals. Groups also learn, or more accurately, the individuals in groups learn about their group and about its relationship with other groups. Moving up to the next system level, organizations also learn, but again, it is actually the individuals in the organizations who learn about the structure and processes in their organization and how their organization relates to other organizations, to the larger society and the environment.
