Throughout history, India's influence on the world has been closely linked to the size and importance of its economy. In the year of Christ's birth, India accounted for 32.9 per cent of the world's economy (comfortably larger than any other civilizational entity), and India's was still the world's largest economy in the year 1700—when India accounted for 24.4 per cent of world's GDP, still slightly ahead of China's 22.8 per cent. Naturally, India's cultural influence pervaded Asia (which, in turn, was the centre of world civilization during the first millennium of the ‘Christian Era’, for want of another phrase).
