British and Russian rivalry shaped the perception of Central Asia in the 19th century. The Great Game epitomized fears of the British Empire builders about the expanding presence of a Czarist Russia in India's neighbourhood. This was given expression in the Anglo-Russian Convention of 1907 relating to Persia, Afghanistan and Tibet. The Convention sought to define spheres of influence, and mute rivalry by freezing the status quo. China was not a player, though it impinged on Tibet which China now claims as part of China. Nor were people of Central Asia consulted.
