The first Chinese came to the United States in search of wealth. California offered a chance to those who could not succeed in their home country and who were able to find passage across the Pacific. The Chinese who came to the United States were viewed by other Americans as a mass of contradictions. They were seen as “clean” because of personal appearance, yet “filthy” because they lived in cramped living quarters. They were viewed as “thrifty” because they spent little on food or clothing, yet “extravagant” because of the money they put into traditional feasts.
