The purpose of this chapter is to describe the customs, beliefs, values, and practices of Jews in the United States. Jewish Americans are difficult to describe because of their diverse origins. Yet, they have retained a high degree of religious and cultural identity. Jewish identity does not rest on the presence of physical traits or religious devoutness, but rather on a sense of belonging that is tied to ancestry. To say that Judaism is a religion ignores too much of Jewish life. The only good way of understanding the Jews is to say that they are a mixture of a religious and a national group, although most think of themselves, their history, and their traditions as mainly religious.
