Ensuring Students Understand Instructions
As teachers, we try to give clear directions. We think we give clear directions. For students without exceptional learning needs (ELN), our directions may be clear. But for students with ELN, our directions frequently are anything but clear.
The plethora of locks on students' learning are also locks on the ability to understand directions. They don't perceive the message we are sending; they don't discriminate between what they are supposed to do and what they are not supposed to do; they are confused; they have poor metacognition, so they think they understand our directions when they don't. From the get-go, they have problems with completing our assignments—in part because they don't get started on the right foot.
