Improving Higher-Order Thinking Skills
We often think that we are teaching students to use higher-order thinking skills when what we are actually doing is giving them problems that require such skills without teaching them the skills required to tackle the problems. General education students may develop workable strategies without our help, but students who have ELN almost certainly will not. However, teaching students strategies and heuristics for analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating is possible. In fact, it is not difficult at all. By explicitly teaching these strategies, not only will our students who have ELN increase their academic achievement in our classes, they will also transfer the skills to new settings if we encourage them to do so.
