Letters are written for the same purpose as memos: to give information, to state beliefs, to argue for positions … and, ultimately, to create a paper trail and provide documentary evidence that a professor, an academic administrator, an appeals board, a lawyer, or a judge (if things get to that stage) will find useful. In many cases, we use the terms memos and letters interchangeably; as mentioned in Chapter 1, so-called promotion letters are technically memos. We tend to use the term letter loosely to suggest matters of some importance.
