This chapter draws on detailed research into the experience of pupils in Years 6 and 7 and reveals their views and feelings about literacy and specifically the literacy hour. We can see that they have strong and essentially mixed feelings about this experience. They can see certain benefits but we can also sense how the obsessive focus of the NLS on narrow approaches to texts in particular may eventually lead to profound disaffection. The chapter has plenty to say about how this dismal outcome may be avoided.
