This chapter examines the experience of middle schools, an almost forgotten territory in terms of the NLS but uniquely placed to offer all other schools a very illuminating perspective. These schools, in their various forms, e.g. 8–12, 11–14, 9–13, etc., have been perceived as the transition schools in themselves, designed to avoid the problems of the primary-secondary divide. The chapter is based on recent research into the middle school experience and offers some unique insights.
