Chapter 2 focuses on the secondary school, especially the period of the last few years, as the Literacy Juggernaut has been viewed as approaching, increasingly at speed. It reviews the ‘readiness’ of schools and their concerns about the Strategy, their relationships with their ‘feeder’ schools and also the potential role of ICT, something problematized by its absence from the NLS documentation. Where relevant it refers back to the Language Across the Curriculum movement, placing the current initiative within a historical and political context.
