Old Ideologies versus New Ones

This chapter opens up the second part of this book, and it is necessary to present some of the main themes with which this second part is concerned. The line of argument presented so far has suggested that the ‘established’ or ‘classical’ ideologies which dominated politics in the period of modernity are all in their different ways problematic in the light of the conditions of contemporary politics. What should be clear is that the classical ideologies of Left and Right no longer mobilise or attract followers in the same way as in the past.
