The Meaning of Ideology

Before analysing particular ideologies, starting with liberalism, and moving on to ideologies of Left and Right and those of nation and nationalism, it is necessary to provide a more detailed analysis of what political ideologies are, why they are valuable, and why (as is argued here) notions of both hegemony and opposition (or contestation) provide the most fruitful tools for understanding the state of ideological politics in the contemporary world.
