Overview

  • Trauma was historically identified as providing a spotty, incomplete memory of the traumatizing event, and flashbacks, which are extremely vivid and long-lasting memories of some aspect of the traumatic event. Recent research has suggested that memory is not always negatively influenced in traumatized individuals.
  • Freud suggested that traumatic events are repressed: that is, actively held out of consciousness as a whole. P. Janet believed that trauma produced a different form of cognition from the usual and that aspects of the traumatic memory could be walled away from consciousness.
