Overview

  • Implicit or nondeclarative memory involves the processing of information that does not enter awareness.
  • Priming involves a change in response to a stimulus that occurs because the same or a similar stimulus has been presented in the past. For instance, if a word such as SPARROW is presented, the same word will be identified faster on its second presentation.
  • Some researchers believe that implicit memory involves a separate system from explicit memory.
  • Theories concerning priming divide primarily between those that assume a processing structure has been activated by the first stimulus, and remains activated across time, and those that assume the effect is due to the relationship between the test cues and earlier memory content.
