Chapter 11: Autobiographical Memory
- We do not recall the first years of our lives, a phenomenon known as infantile or childhood amnesia. Fragment, isolated memories begin to appear at around the age of 3 and narrative, ongoing autobiographical memory at 5 or 6 years.
- Current theories concerning childhood amnesia include a weakness in coding assumption, a cueing assumption (according to which adult thought cues do not match infantile thought structure), and theories of social interaction, according to which children learn to form memories due to contact with adults who model this function.
