This chapter is an ethnographic examination of the ways in which migrants into two neighbourhoods of Istanbul come to know and interpret the built environment which they inhabit and which surrounds them. Weaving through migrants' ways of negotiating the materialities around them, I discover that the city is known to its contemporary inhabitants in fragmentary, partial, and bitty forms. As if collecting pieces of a puzzle or assembling units of debris, migrants attempt to understand the past and the future of the built environment significantly left behind, in these neighbourhoods, by Greek and Jewish exiles or émigrés from Istanbul.
