Chapter 4: Observation
There's a great deal more observation of teaching than ever before, carried out by a range of people: inspectors, headteachers, members of senior leadership teams, subject leaders, induction tutors, mentors, teacher tutors and governors. There are also more teachers watching others in order to improve their own practice. With the short notice inspection system, senior staff are watching lessons so often that some teachers are refusing to let trainees observe their classroom practice. Teaching unions have called for a halt to the observation overload. They say excessive scrutiny is damaging teachers' morale and confidence.
