Unlike many other professions, including most recently those in the Learning and Skills/Further Education sector, where individuals are expected to accrue or ‘clock up’ 30 hours of professional development annually, school teachers are allocated five additional days when pupils are not on site. They are known as training, INSET, professional, Baker or development days. The latter is the term we prefer because they should be about staff development.
