In this chapter we will focus on some of the economic and social factors that can affect children’s health and well-being. Previously we have largely focused on the more intimate micro factors, such as personal relationships, experiences and environments, and how these combine and interact with genetic make-up and temperament to construct childhood experiences. Here, using poverty as our focus, we consider the influence of the larger context in which a child’s world is situated. Examples of how macro factors, such as economic structures, physical environments and societal relations contribute to a child’s health and well-being will be explored.
