Social work agencies conduct many groups that depart from the traditional long-term closed-group model. While these groups may be built on social work values and practice principles, their limitations of time, agenda constraints, and/or fluidity of membership pose particular practice dilemmas for the group worker. For example, the constraints of time affect the practitioner's ability to guide the development of a belonging system built on relationship, mutual aid, and democratic process. A fluctuating membership during the life span of the group poses difficulties in the development of group cohesion.
