The System of Universities and Colleges in India
Indian university system came to be established in 1857 when first three universities were set in three port towns of India, namely Calcutta (now Kolkata), Bombay (now Mumbai) and Madras (now Chennai). Prior to this, a couple of colleges were set up during the British rule to meet the engineering, administrative and medical needs of British rulers.
