Informative/explanatory writing lessons

In this chapter, we present three lessons (one social studies, one science, one technical subject) that we believe are particularly effective for addressing the CCSS for Writing. These lessons involve many reading and writing skills and thus address the majority of the CCSS; however, we have designated the lessons according to the text types and purposes of their writing requirements.

The lessons in this chapter help students formulate and enhance their informative/explanatory writing skills:

  • Technical Subject: Grades 6–8, “Math in Everyday Life”
  • Science: Grades 9–10, “Earth Day”
  • History/Social Studies: Grades 11–12, “Montgomery Bus Boycott”
