Chapter 5: Postmodern Psychoanalytic Feminism: Sexual Difference
In Chapter 4 on Gender Difference feminism I noted that this theoretical direction is concerned with ‘more than one’, with more than the universal Human. Gender Difference feminism stresses instead that gender makes a difference, that gender cuts across this singularity. This direction in Feminism announces that there are at least two conceptions of the Human. I also pointed out that Gender Difference feminism is spread across the Modernist-Postmodern continuum. Indeed, it consists of two variants: on the one hand, a Modernist, so-called ‘women-centred’, approach which is organised around an Identity Politics revaluing women and, on the other, a more Postmodern-influenced Psychoanalytic approach dominated by what is often called ‘Sexual Difference’ feminism (Figure 5.1).
