Students today score much higher marks in board exams than previous generations used to. This is either because they are better exam takers or are beneficiaries of a pattern of grade inflation. A paper by microeconomist Robertas Zubrickas shows that inflation of raw scores would succeed in eliciting a greater amount of effort from the student body as a whole although higher quality students may tend to work less as a result. However, if potential recruiters are aware of the grade inflation then its value as a tool to incentivize greater effort diminishes.75
